FPA-500E Piezoelectric Actuator
 Description
DSM's FPA-500E is a flexure-based piezoelectric actuator ideal for both dynamic and static applications where precise and accurate positioning is required. The FPA-500E is mechanically preloaded to ensure bi-directional operation, providing increased resilience to mechanical loads when compared to non-preloaded actuators. The kinematic mechanism provides high-stroke operation in an exceptionally small package. The displacement of the mechanism is transmitted through two parallel output plates featuring through or tapped attachment holes in metric or English threads. Custom mounting conditions can be integrated into the design.

Models
The FPA-500E actuator is generally manufactured with low voltage (150V) piezo material, but other piezo materials and voltages are available by request.
Custom Actuators
DSM has extensive experience in actuator design for specialized force or stroke requirements. Customers are encouraged to contact DSM regarding any specific actuator requests.
Actuator Application
DSM's customer required a very compact XYZ motion system for a high-vacuum application. The standard FPA-500E design was adapted with larger output plates for specimen mounting and to serve as the Z-axis actuator for the complete system shown at right.
The X and Y stages were 60mm square, and each stage provided 200 microns of displacement through a piezo-driven, flexure-based design. DSM's VF-100 bench top amplifiers were used to drive the piezoelectric stages in open-loop fashion.
