DSM uses its advanced actuation technologies to develop compact control actuation systems (CAS) for customers that require precise independent closed loop actuation of steering fins.  Applications include guided mortars, missiles, and railgun projectiles.

Current developments have focused on 60 – 155 mm caliber projectiles.  These units are designed to allow between 2-4 axes of independent motion depending on application requirements.

The control actuation systems developed by DSM boast high performance and precision coupled with low size, weight, and power (SWaP).  The CAS axes are capable of outputting up to 1 N-m of torque and a max speed of 1800 degrees/second at no load.  The actuators and electronics used in DSM’s CAS design have been tested at, and survived, launch accelerations exceeding 30,000 g.

DSM's proprietary CAS technology provides increased precision, simplified packaging, and a reduction in battery size, enabling smaller precision guided munitions to be realized.
